The transition to Veeam took only a week and required only 16 hours of TietoEVRY specialists' worktime. The time was spent mainly on the solution design and on testing while going live with it.
"You can restore files without the service desk. To do this, we use the self-service feature in Veeam Enterprise Manager, delegating authority to the customer. A great advantage of the solution is the guest OS files indexing. A customer can log into the portal using their Active Directory account to enter a file name in the search box and find existing backups. Thus, there is no need to restore data from a backup beforehand," - said Alexander Kozlov, architect of cloud infrastructures for TietoEVRY.
TietoEVRY specialists manage this customer's cloud infrastructure, but parallel use of the self-service feature allows conducting DevOps normally. Many Russian and foreign developers are involved in the client's ecosystem. Veeam also helps them accelerate new products testing and development.
"We work with multitude of customer's contractors, i.e. developers who install applications on top of the operating system. We backup data before we hand over the machine. Previously, we had to manually restore hardware dozens of times if the developer needed to restart the environment. There is a forced necessity to reinstall virtual machines, map drives, and recover data from snapshots, if there is no built-in backup. With Veeam, it is enough to simply restart the machine in recovery mode, and it will be automatically restored to its original state in 20 minutes. This has significantly improved the service quality for our customers", said Zubkov.
The selected Russian public cloud service provider uses OpenStack and KVM technologies. Veeam does not support these platforms, but TietoEVRY experts set up the necessary processes using Veeam Agents for Linux and Windows.
"A great advantage is that it is enough to specify the machine entered in Active Directory in the Veeam Backup & Replication console, and the agent will be installed automatically. There is no need to log in to the system and install anything manually. All updates, as well as backup tasks management, are carried out centrally and automatically", Kozlov added.
Veeam allows automatically restoring individual files. This significantly reduces RTO and increases the speed of development processes for both TietoEVRY and its customers.
Veeam helped to meet the client's failover requirements and ensure system activity and stability even during crashes, moreover, it also brought significant financial benefits. The customer from the "G2000" list saved several hundred thousand rubles, since the required level of data and applications availability is provided without creating extra copies of virtual machines. Moreover, Veeam allows using compatible cost-effective storage for long-term backup storage. At specified intervals, backups are automatically transferred for long-term storage to a S3-compliant storage.
The TietoEVRY's customer has managed to significantly reduce the expenses for data protection. Standard public cloud tools could not protect all applications in use. Instead of using the software from the cloud service provider to protect some applications, and Veeam solutions to protect others, TietoEVRY and the customer decided that Veeam solutions would be used to protect all cloud data.
"We have already tested an emergency recovery plan for the production system. Thanks to Veeam's data protection solutions, the customer's RTO and RPO requirements have been met", Zubkov said.
Aside from that, TietoEVRY customers can select additional services, for example, using Veeam Cloud Connect to replicate VM data from local data centers in the repository in the TietoEVRY data center, thereby creating a reliable DRaaS solution (emergency recovery as a service). In case of any accidents in the main data center, the servers will be restored to the TietoEVRY cloud in a few minutes with the help of Cloud Connect, and the customer's business will not get affected: this pattern ensures business continuity without forced downtime.
